Eastern Region

Located 50 miles to the southeast of the city of Mendoza, at an elevation of 1,950 - 2,150 feet. This area, covering counties such as San Martín, Junín and Rivadavia is one of the oldest and most traditional viticultural regions in Mendoza.

As with all of Mendoza, the Eastern Region is a true desert, receiving less than 8” of rain a year. The need of irrigation is met with pure mountain spring water from snow melt of the Andes, arriving to the region via the Tunuyán River.

Tilia wines have a strict drip irrigation control, allowing to manage the volume of water in each plant, thus achieving great watering efficiency. The families of the farmers who work on our vines know how to use irrigation to maximize quality. Water is so precious in Mendoza that winemakers jealously watch every drop of water in the vineyards.

A desert climate means 330 of sunshine days a year. Tilia farmers use vertical shoot positioning. In the Eastern Region, the Tilia team has worked with farmers to develop new plantation densities and lower yield levels that increase concentration and flavor intensity.

The grapes from the Eastern Region develop very ripe, rich fruit flavors and produce wines with excellent mid-palate richness.

Uco Valley Region

Located 100 miles due south from Mendoza city, at an elevation of 3,000 - 4,000 feet. This area mainly covers the San Carlos and Tupungato counties. It is considered to be one of the premiere grape growing regions in Mendoza.

High altitude translates into much lower temperatures, allowing for more aromatic intensity and higher levels of natural acid for freshness and balance.

Even though the Uco Valley Region is also a desert irrigated by the Tunuyán River, our family farmers have adopted drip irrigation to increase efficiency.

Tilia farmers use vertical shoot positioning for optimal sunlight exposure. For Malbec this is especially important to achieve aromatic intensity.

The grapes from the Uco Valley have very intense and complex flavors and lend a cool freshness to the Tilia wines.

Mendoza Central Region

Located 12 miles due south from Mendoza city, at an elevation of 2,600 - 3,700 feet. This area covers the Luján de Cuyo and Maipú counties. Mendoza Central Region is also a desert irrigated by the Mendoza River.

Mendoza oldest vineyards are located in this area where some of Mendoza's high quality wines are produced. The alluvial clay soils and rocky subsoil, containing very low levels of organic matter, together with the continental climate and wide thermal amplitude conditions produce rich, intense wines of a deep violet color and concentrated plummy and spicy flavors.

Winemaker

Leopoldo Kuschnaroff

Born into a family of farmers of Ukrainian descent in Mendoza, Argentina, Leopoldo is a true son of the wine region.

He graduated in viticulture in 2006 and followed with a master’s degree in winemaking from the prestigious Cuyo University. He then perfected his knowledge in the United States and returned to Argentina to join Bodegas Esmeralda in 2008 where he explored different viticultural areas of the country. After a few years, he took over the management of the winery.

Leopoldo’s prime philosophy and goal as a winemaker is to make wines reflective of the terroir, a challenge which enables him to experiment with the different microclimates of Argentina, perfecting wines that are truly representative of their regions.
